ABout different Punch Needle sizes
From left to right: #10 fine, #10 regular, #9 punch needle
The Joyful Punch offers Oxford Punch Needles in different sizes. The number of a needle will tell you how tall the loops are. Additionally there is a distinction between regular and fine needles. The fine needles will work with finer yarn, the regular needles with thicker yarn. Here is more information about what yarn to use.
For beginners I recommend starting with the #10 regular because you will see great results most quickly.
Here's an overview of the loop heights the most common needle sizes make:
- #9 makes 3/8” / ca 1 cm tall loops
- #10 makes 1/4” / ca 0,6 cm tall loops
- #13 makes 3/16" / ca 0,5 cm tall loops
- #14 makes 1/8" / 0,3 cm tall loops

The #9 (darker blue) loops are slightly higher than the ones made with #10 (light blue).
